MCPON Releases Independence Day Message

Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON)(SS/SW) Rick D. West released the following Independence Day message to the fleet June 28.

“Shipmates and Navy families,

As we take time to celebrate 236 years of independence, let us not forget those who sacrificed to secure our nation’s liberty and freedom as well as those of us who continue to pursue the ‘truths’ that Thomas Jefferson wrote about so profoundly when he authored the Declaration of Independence.

‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.’

The Declaration of Independence is a document that stands the test of time and is revered as one of the most beautiful and powerful testaments to liberty and equality in world history. If you have not seen this document in person, I encourage you to do so, but if you can’t make it to the National Archives in Washington, D.C., you can see and read it by visiting: https://www.archives.gov/exhibits/charters/declaration.html.

While many of us will enjoy some time off to celebrate the Fourth of July, please remember the thousands of Sailors who are deployed around the world protecting our freedoms. Also, think safety … whether on the road, the water or in your backyard, keep safety in mind. If you decide to drink, don’t drive and have a plan to get home.

I am very proud of each and every one of you for the sacrifices you and your families make for our great Navy and nation.
