Construction of French Scorpene Submarines Expected by June 2015, Defense Minister Says

As written by the Times of India, Defense Minister A K Antony pointed out Wednesday that the Mazagon Dock ltd, India’s premier shipyard constructing warships as well as offshore platforms, will complete the construction of the French Scorpene submarines by June 2015.

The Rs 23,000 crore project underlies construction of six submarines under Project-75, however the modernization process is running three years behind schedule.

Presently, the Indian Navy disposes of 14 aging diesel-electric submarines, which are to be replaced with submarines, armed with both land attack missiles as well as air-independent propulsion for greater endurance.

Modernisation of the submarine fleet is being undertaken on a progressive basis to maintain combat worthiness. The equipment/systems that have undergone/are undergoing modernization are combat system, sensors, navigation complex, communication suite and auxiliary equipment,” the Minister stated.
