Detyens Shipyards Receives USNS William McLean Contract

Detyens Shipyards, Inc. is being awarded a $7,833,941 firm-fixed-price contract for a 60-calendar day post-shakedown shipyard availability and dry docking of Military Sealift Command dry cargo/ammunition ship USNS William McLean.

Work will include cleaning tanks; partitioning a lubricating oil storage tank; modifying associated piping; installing access doors; flushing the fresh water and chill water system; installing a reverse-osmosis desalination unit to produce fresh water; and inspecting the propeller shaft, stern tube and stern tube seals.

Naval Sea Systems Command (PMS 325) provided funding to accomplish approved alterations during the post-shakedown shipyard availability. McLean’s primary mission is to provide fuel, ammunition and dry and refrigerated stores to support U.S. Navy ships at sea, enabling them to remain underway for extended periods. This contract includes options which, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value of this contract to $9,295,936.

Work will be performed in North Charleston, S.C., and is expected to be completed by March 26, 2012. Contract funds will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. This contract was a small business set-aside, with more than 50 companies solicited via the Federal Business Opportunities website, with two offers received. The U.S. Navy’s Military Sealift Fleet Support Command, Norfolk, Va., a field activity of Military Sealift Command, is the contracting activity.
