U.S. 6th Fleet Commander Visits USS Bulkeley in Spain

The commander of U.S. 6th Fleet visited guided-missile destroyer USS Bulkeley (DDG 84) June 25 when the ship was anchored outside the Mahon Harbor in Menorca, Spain.

Vice Adm. Harry B. Harris, commander, U.S. 6th Fleet, also participated in a wreath-laying memorial ceremony in Menorca June 26.

After an office call, Cmdr. Sean Anderson, Bulkeley’s commanding officer, took Harris on a tour of the ‘Bulkeley P-way,’ a museum hallway honoring the ship’s namesake.

“It meant a lot to the ‘wolf-pack’ (crew) for Vice Adm. Harris to take time out of his Menorca schedule to visit the ship,” said Anderson. “This is a proud crew that loves to show off their ship.”

Harris met with the wardroom and the chief’s mess to discuss their deployment and answer any questions they might have.

I would like to congratulate you all on a great deployment so far,” said Harris. “Bulkeley has made an impact in counter-piracy operations, and you continue to serve the Navy’s mission.

The wreath-laying memorial ceremony was for fallen U.S. Navy Sailors at the Anglo-Americano Cemetery in Mahon Harbor in Menorca, Spain. The Spanish naval base unveiled a stone tribute to 34 fallen U.S. Sailors who were stationed at Mahon Harbor in the 1800s.

Harris and Bulkeley leadership also participated in a ceremony in remembrance of Adm. David G. Farragut at the Adm. Farrugut Memorial in Ciutadella, Menorca, Spain.

Bulkeley is deployed as part of the Enterprise Carrier Strike Group (CSG), supporting maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of responsibility. Enterprise CSG includes aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65); CSG 12; Destroyer Squadron 2; guided-missile cruiser USS Leyte Gulf (CG 55); guided-missile destroyers Bulkeley, USS Barry (DDG 52) and USS Mason (DDG 87); and eight squadrons from Carrier Air Wing 1.
